Every dog owner wants to feed their pet the best food they can find; or at least they should. High quality dog foods or premium brands are usually higher priced, so when every penny is accounted for these days, it’s important to know what you’re getting. What do you really know about the brands of dog food? Nutrition and a dog’s health go hand in hand, so there must be a connection between what the dog eats and how he looks and feels.
Just like people do, dogs also begin to feel the effects of a poor diet. When the dog eats a poor quality brand of food, they are not getting what they need in the form of nutrition walking can improve your health. Typically, the premium pet foods contain ingredients that are nutrient dense and are better for the dog’s digestion. However, most commercial pet foods contain ingredients that are not only unhealthy but down right toxic. Humans cannot survive on a diet of junk foods, so why on earth would we feed it to our pets?
When we take our dogs to the vet we see all of the fancy packaged foods they offer for sale. A sad truth is that just because they sell pet foods in the offices does not mean they know that much about dog nutrition and the differences between the various kinds of expensive dog food brands. Ask your vet what constitutes good and bad dog food and see what they tell you. I am always skeptical about anything that is sold in a doctor’s office given that they are making a profit by pushing the brands.
We should all take time to learn about what actually goes into commercial foods. Some contain food that is not safe for humans to consume – things like meat from diseased animals. Just about anything that can be ground up into a paste can be put into animal food. I wouldn’t feed my dog a dead squirrel off the road, but the pet food companies can add it to the foods they have rendered and then processed. An old joke used to be that dog food contains whatever can be scraped off of the foundry floor. Seriously?
Now, remember, there are some very good commercial brands out there. Some actually use products that are safe for dogs and humans alike. They stress organic, high quality meat and grains in their foods. Reading the packaging labels is not enough these days. Dog owners must be educated about what true canine nutrition really is and then choose foods that qualify.
We all want to give our pets the best, but sometimes even our good intentions go awry. Learning what a dog needs to stay healthy and live a long life is not hard, it just takes some research. All that you need is the will to learn and the interest to feed your dog healthy food. Now that you’ve learned a little bit about commercial dog foods, take a minute to learn about how you can make homemade dog food recipes yourself.
